SangDoo Nam was born and raised in South Korea. Like many of his generation who are immersed in digital culture — spending time online, meeting people, and gathering experiences in the digital world — his artistic motivations are deeply rooted in this realm. He draws significant influence from Sol LeWitt’s approach to art, particularly admiring LeWitt’s method of creating art as programming, which has steered his own art towards a more conceptual direction.
Nam strives to transform the process of his artistic activities into a program, continuously updating and evolving his methods by breaking conventional patterns established through repetition. These updates are shared on his website in the form of patch notes, a method commonly used in the computer game industry to announce updates.
His journey began with an attempt to define 'virtual skills' from computer games within the context of painting, leading him to profound questions like ‘What is reality?’ In an era where rapid digital advancements are blurring the lines between reality and illusion, he aims to push the boundaries of painting into a more dynamic and tangible reality.
Recently, he has been learning programming and creating AI to further expand his art world, in line with his original vision.
